Project overview

Pets N Pals has been a Staunton, Virginia pet store since 1989. It is family owned, walk-ins are always welcome, and every puppy goes home with a family that met it in person. Cosmick Media handled the pet shop website design and development for the new Pets N Pals website.

However, the store does more than sell puppies. It also runs a self-serve dog wash and sells live feeders, reptile supplies and food for dogs, small animals and birds. So the website needed to put puppies first while still giving the rest of the store room to shine.

Website design for a busy local pet shop

Puppy inventory at Pets N Pals changes every week. Meanwhile, the store runs seasonal sales, answers calls and texts all day and serves families from across the Shenandoah Valley. A site like this cannot depend on someone editing pages by hand every time a puppy goes home.

In addition, families want to know who they are buying from. That means real store policies, real reviews and a clear way to visit, call or text before they ever drive over.

Pet shop website design that puts puppies first

We built a custom WordPress theme for Pets N Pals and used WooCommerce to manage puppy listings. As a result, each puppy has its own page, and the homepage, puppy pages and breed lists all pull from the same data. Here is what the new site includes:

  • Puppy search. Families can type a breed, or just part of one. For example, “doodle” brings up every doodle in the store, and breed buttons show what is in the store right now.
  • Live puppy listings. Each card shows the price, breed, gender, birth date and reference ID. Also, a date stamp shows when the list was last updated.
  • Detailed puppy profiles. Each puppy page lists color, microchip status, pet ID and where to meet. A short inquiry form, plus call and text buttons, sit right next to the photo.
  • Honest store policies. Pages explain breeder screening, vet care and the written health guarantee. They also make it clear that the store never ships puppies and offers video introductions instead.
  • Happy endings. A Recently Found a Home section and a puppy photo gallery celebrate puppies that went home with local families.
  • Reviews and a blog. Real customer reviews and puppy care articles help families before and after they bring a puppy home.

Sale promotions built into the site

Pets N Pals runs seasonal puppy sales, so we built promotions into the theme. The team sets the offer, the dates and a photo in WordPress. While the sale runs, the homepage hero, the top banner and a small pop-up badge all show the offer, along with a live countdown to the last day.

More than puppies

Every part of the store also gets its own page. For instance, dog owners can check self-serve dog wash rules and pricing, and reptile keepers can learn about live feeders and supplies. Financing, small animal and bird supplies, and an Our Puppies, Our Way page round it out.

Next, local pages for Charlottesville, Buena Vista and Stuarts Draft reach families outside Staunton. Every page ends with store hours that show whether the store is open right now, plus directions, a call button and a text button.

Built for a store that never slows down

On phones, a sticky bar keeps Call and Directions buttons in reach, and each puppy page adds an Ask About button for that puppy. Gravity Forms handles inquiries and asks whether a number is a landline or a cell, so the team knows whether to call or text back.

Finally, the site is hosted on Kinsta with Cloudflare and tracked with Google Tag Manager. That way, Pets N Pals can see which pages turn into calls, texts and visits.
