Project overview

Quality Business Engraving, known online as QBE Tags, has made custom industrial identification products in Rochester Hills, Michigan since 1989. Its tags, nameplates, labels and safety signs go to aerospace, manufacturing, utility and municipal customers across the country. We rebuilt the industrial tags ecommerce website for the QBE Tags website on WordPress and WooCommerce, then launched Google Ads to bring in buyers.

QBE sells products that are rarely one size fits all. A valve tag might need a certain metal, size, hole and engraved text. Buyers also want to know it will ship fast. Therefore, the new site had to make custom ordering feel as easy as buying something off the shelf.

Project write-up

An industrial tags ecommerce website for spec-driven buyers

Most QBE customers are maintenance managers, plant engineers and purchasing agents. They know what they need and want to order it without a phone call. Plus, many government and aerospace buyers check credentials before they buy, so QBE’s SAM, D-U-N-S and ITAR details sit right in the footer.

The design is practical. Steel blue category banners, a full color QBE logo and a left sidebar of product categories make the catalog easy to scan. In addition, real photos of engraved metal and plastic tags show finish and color better than any description.

A catalog built for custom orders

We moved QBE’s full catalog into WooCommerce and built templates around how people order tags. Here is what it includes:

  • Category navigation. Sixteen featured categories, from aerospace labels and valve tags to lock out tag out, ISO stickers and oil board stencils, each with its own landing page.
  • Product options. YITH Advanced Product Options let buyers choose size, material and custom text on the product page before adding to cart.
  • Fast product search. Advanced Woo Search returns matching products as people type in the header search bar.
  • Live shipping rates. UPS and USPS rates calculate at checkout, and a site wide notice explains that in stock orders placed by 2 PM EST ship the same day.
  • Reviews and quotes. Star ratings and a reviews page build trust, while Request a Quote and a shareable cart quote handle large or custom orders.

Careful migration and tracking

Likewise, we migrated product data, images, stock and variations from the old catalog and kept existing URLs in mind to protect search rankings. Finally, we set up Google Analytics and conversion tracking to measure engagement across channels.

One platform for the store and the ads

The site runs on a custom Cosmick WordPress theme with WooCommerce, hosted on WP Engine behind Cloudflare, and Mailchimp for WooCommerce keeps customer lists in sync. After launch, we started a Google Ads program with search and remarketing campaigns pointed at the product categories.
